Southampton Watergate stood at the bottom of Southampton High Street. Built in 1377, following a French raid on the city, it was intended that it strengthen Southampton’s southern defences. The Watergate was demolished in 1804. Note: The shadow on the scanned image DOES NOT appear on the original.

Original copper-plate engraved print from ‘The Antiquities of England and Wales’ by Francis Grose, dated in the plate 10th July, 1784. Paper size approx. 10.75 x 8 inches. . Excellent condition. A rare item.
