Portrait of Múk-a-tah-mish-o-káh-kaik (Black Hawk), a Sauk Chief. Black Hawk was the namesake for the Black Hawk war fought against the United States in 1832. Known as the "British Band" the Sauk warriors raised the British Union flag in their fight against the United States Army. Portrait taken from Dr. James C. Prichard's 'Natural History of Man'. 1855 edition. Published in London and New York by Hippolyte Bailliere. Original hand-coloured etchings. Paper size approx. 9.5×6 inches. A rare antique item.
