Coldbath Field’s Prison was on the site of Mount Pleasant, it was also known as the Middlesex House of Correction, Clerkenwell Gaol and informally as ‘the Steel.’ Originally designed for petty criminals, serving a sentence of two years, it eventually became notorious for its strict ‘silence’ regime and use of the ‘treadmill.’ This antique aquatint is dated in the plate 1808, and is a bright clean example of Ackermann’s craft. Dimensions of the print from the plate mark is 11×9 inches. Print has full margins which are not captured by the scan.
