Royal Hospital Chelsea antique print. A rare original copper plate engraving by Benjamin Cole (1697-1783) produced for William Maitland's (c.1693–1757) History of London from Its Foundation to the Present Time dated c.1756. Cole was the official engraver to the Grand Lodge of Freemasons. He's said to have died aged 86 and was buried in St. Andrew Church, Holborn. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, following the Restoration of King Charles II, the Royal Hospital opened its doors to the Chelsea Pensioners in 1692.
A nice clean image save for a 'foxing' spot to the right of the stairs. Paper size approx. 16x10 inches.
