The ‘Pass Room, Bridewell.’ alternatively known as ‘Bridewell Hospital,’ or ‘Bridewell House of Correction,’ it was, in fact, a prison for criminal, homeless, unmarried mothers and prostitutes. It existed from 1553 until 1855 and was built on the banks of the River Fleet. The notice on the wall reads, “Those who dirty their beds will be punished.” This antique aquatint is dated in the plate 1808. There is a small crease to the bottom left-hand corner. Dimensions of the print from the plate mark is 11×9 inches. Print has full margins which are not captured by the scan. A rare item.
