Bethnal Green Employment Association Labour Yard antique print published in The Illustrated London News on February 15th. in 1867. Under the headline ‘The Distress in East London,’ our woodblock engraving depicts men in what appears to be an un-heated railway arch, breaking stones in order to receive ‘out relief’ rather than be placed in the workhouse. All are wearing hats, including a few top-hatted.
The broken stones were possibly used in construction or for the foundations and repair of roads.
